About the Africa Map Quiz
The Africa Map Quiz challenges you to locate all 54 African countries on an interactive map. Africa has more countries than any other continent, making this the ultimate geography challenge.
From well-known nations like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa to frequently missed countries like Eswatini, Comoros, and São Tomé and Príncipe, this quiz covers every sovereign state on the continent.
You can play in four modes: Click the Map, Name It (multiple choice), Speed Run (endless timed mode), and a Daily Challenge with 10 countries per day.
Why is Africa the hardest continent on geography quizzes?
Africa is consistently the hardest continent for three reasons. First, it has the most countries (54) — that alone makes it statistically harder than South America (12) or Oceania (14). Second, many African borders are straight lines drawn by European colonial powers, making neighboring countries hard to distinguish visually. Third, several African countries have changed names in recent years — Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Cabo Verde (formerly Cape Verde), and Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) — which confuses people who learned the old names.
The most commonly missed African countries are São Tomé and Príncipe, Eswatini, Cabo Verde, Comoros, Djibouti, and Lesotho. The West African coast (15 countries packed into a narrow strip) and the Great Lakes region (Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania) are the trickiest clusters.

Tips for Scoring 100% on the Africa Map Quiz
- Learn the anchor countries first:Start with the five biggest and most recognizable: Egypt (northeast corner), Nigeria (West Africa's bulge), DR Congo (center), Ethiopia (Horn of Africa), South Africa (southern tip). These give you fixed reference points for placing everything else.
- Learn by sub-region: The African Union divides Africa into five regions: North (6), West (15), East (16), Central (8), and Southern (8). Master one region at a time. Start with North Africa — only 6 countries and all are relatively well-known.
- Know the three Guineas: Guinea (capital: Conakry), Guinea-Bissau (capital: Bissau), and Equatorial Guinea (capital: Ciudad de la Paz) are three separate, unrelated countries. Guinea and Guinea-Bissau sit next to each other in West Africa. Equatorial Guinea is in Central Africa.
- Remember the name changes: Eswatini is Swaziland. Cabo Verde is Cape Verde. Burkina Faso is Upper Volta. DR Congo is Zaire. If you learned geography more than a few years ago, update your mental map.
- Drill the island nations: Africa has six island nations — Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Cabo Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe. They are easy to forget because they sit off the coast. Our quiz zooms in automatically when an island nation is the target.
